6 Super Bowl Cocktails to Kick Off the Big Game

Got your jerseys ready? Already have your menu (wings vs. burgers, nachos vs. chips and dip) planned out?

Because it's time for Super Bowl Sunday, one of the biggest sporting events of the year and one of the best days to host a party! This football season-ender brings friends, family, and fans together for food, fun, and most importantly: drinks.

For many Americans, Super Bowl Sunday is not complete without a beer in hand, but what if you want to switch things up a bit? Some say the game is won or lost on the field, but we're here to show that winners are also decided at the bar.

So what makes the ideal Super Bowl cocktail? One, it should be easy to make in a big batch. You don't want to be stuck stirring drinks to order.

Two, it should be boozy enough to keep things interesting throughout the game, but also light enough to not leave you with a hangover after the final whistle blows. Or maybe you want a drink that feels like you just got tackled — we aren't here to judge!

Finally, drinks should be easy to down quickly, whether it's to celebrate a touchdown or drown your sorrows when the other team gets one.

So here are our top six favorite Super Bowl cocktails, complete with appetizer pairings, to get you ready for game day!

1. Beer Margaritas

Because why not merge a cocktail and a pre-game tradition? This beer margarita tastes just like a classic margarita, but with a crisp beer taste. It's boozy enough to keep you going for great plays, but you could easily have a few without feeling too woozy. Made with a light beer, limeade concentrate, and tequila of your choosing, this cocktail definitely brings a twist to the standard pre-game fiesta.

Pairs well with: Nachos with the works

1 lime, cut into 8 wedges

1/4 cup coarse salt

2 (12-ounce) bottles your favorite beer, chilled

1/2 cup frozen concentrate limeade, thawed

1/2 cup chilled tequila

Ice cubes

  1. Rub lime wedges around rims of 4 margarita glasses. Dip rims into salt to coat lightly.
  2. In a medium pitcher, combine beer, limeade, and tequila.
  3. Fill prepared glasses with ice, then with margarita mixture.
  4. Garnish with remaining lime wedges. Serve immediately.

2. Touchdown Punch

Your team just scored? Time to celebrate with some bubbly! No, not champagne (though we won't stop you from popping some bottles if your squad is winning it all!). We're talking about this beautiful, bright-blue punch. The bubbling, effervescent drink combines lime soda and Prosecco with vodka and blue Curaçao to make the perfect celebratory drink that goes down easy.

Pairs well with: Pigs-in-a-blanket or mozzarella sticks

1 L Sprite

4 cups seltzer

1 (750-ml.) bottle Prosecco

1 cups vodka

1/4 cup blue Curaçao

1 lemon, thinly sliced

3 cup ice

  1. Combine all ingredients in a punch bowl. Stir to combine and serve into glasses. Creates 10 servings.

3. Alabama Slammer

What better way to honor your team than by naming a drink after them? This spicy shot-turned-cocktail is just as good as the original, but so much better.

The Alabama Slammer's intensely fruity mix of Southern Comfort, sloe gin, orange juice, and amaretto will give any fan the winning edge they need to go on to victory. Whether you're cheering for the Los Angeles Rams or cheering for the Cincinnati Bengals, this tasty concoction has enough kick to keep everyone happy until the clock runs out!

Pairs well with: Jalapeño poppers, 7 Layer Dip

1 ounce Whiskey (Southern Comfort)

1 ounce amaretto

1 ounce sloe gin

2 ounces orange juice

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes.
  2. Pour in all the ingredients and shake well.
  3. Fill a highball glass with ice.
  4. Strain the mixture into it.
  5. Garnish with a cherry and an orange wheel.

4. Tailgate Sipper

You have to bust out the blender or food processor for this one, but it's absolutely worth it! This frosty drink features bourbon, lemon sparkling water, bourbon, Southern Comfort, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and pineapple.

Everyone's going to love that tropical vibe and the delicious bourbon taste (it's like an island vacation in a glass). After all, it's February - who doesn't want to pretend they're at the beach while watching their favorite teams battle it out?

Pairs well with: Sliders, fried appetizers

4 cups cubed fresh pineapple

1 cup bourbon

1 cup chilled lemon sparkling water (such as Perrier)

½ cup Whiskey (Southern Comfort)

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  1. Process pineapple in a food processor or blender 30 seconds or until smooth, stopping to scrape down sides as needed.
  2. Pour mixture through a fine wire-mesh strainer into a 2-qt. pitcher, pressing to release juice. Discard solids. Stir in bourbon and remaining 4 ingredients. Serve immediately over ice.

5. Cranberry 75 Punch

Feeling fancy? This sparkling, cranberry-flavored punch is sure to impress. But don't let the classy presentation fool you - this recipe takes less than 5 minutes to make and it's perfect for a big crowd.

The blend of cranberry juice, lemonade concentrate, and gin with sparkling wine is the perfect mix of sweet and tart. And if you want, you can even rim the glasses with sugar to give this drink a little extra somethin' somethin'.

Don't like cranberries? No problem! Sub with any of your favorite juices, like grapefruit juice, orange juice, or pineapple juice. This recipe is easily scalable, so you can make a small batch to serve 10 or a large batch to serve 100.

Pairs well with: Bite-sized appetizers like crab cakes and chicken skewers

2-3 cup fresh or frozen cranberries, plus more for serving

3 clementines, thinly sliced

8 cups cranberry juice cocktail

2 cups gin

1/2 cups fresh clementine juice

1bottle sparkling white wine

  1. In a Bundt pan, scatter cranberries and clementine slices. Top with water and freeze.
  2. In a punch bowl, combine cranberry juice, gin and clementine juice. Add frozen ice ring, plus additional cranberries.
  3. Top with sparkling wine and serve.

6. Fruit Sangria

Can't forget your beer-hating friends! This fruity sangria uses two kinds of fruit to give it a burst of flavor, but the real magic's in the brandy and red wine. You'll want something dry, like a nice rioja or pinot noir to really bring out the flavors. As for the brandy, you'll want to use a strong one, like Hennessy. Plus, this sangria gets better as it sits, so you can make it ahead of time or even serve it in small punch bowls or carafes.

Pairs well with: Anything rich or salty, like stuffed mushrooms or nuts!

1 cup brandy

1/2 cup sugar

1 orange, ends cut off, thinly sliced

1 apple, halved and thinly sliced

2 bottles well-chilled dry red wine, such as Rioja or red Zinfandel

1 cup club soda

3/4 cup fresh orange juice

  1. In a large pitcher, stir together brandy, sugar, and orange and apple slices. Let stand 15 minutes. Add wine, club soda, and orange juice. Serve over ice.
